The European Influence on Workers' Compensation Reform in the United States

This article chronicles the history of the United States’ workers’ compensation system and its basis on models of social insurance originally developed in Europe. Recent workers’ compensation reform proposals in the United States have been influenced by the European systems. The 2006 Public Health Reform proposal, which was heavily influenced by the European model, would replace the workers’ compensation system with a national disability insurance system within which the role of physicians would be limited to consulting with and advising patients privately.
